Losing weight is more than just exercising and eating a healthy diet, a new study has found.
In fact, the surprising key behind losing weight could be down to…. MENTAL HEALTH.
The recent study, which was published in Frontiers in Endocrinology, found that emotional support and mindfulness have a significant impact on reducing instances of overeating.
How your mental health could be affecting your body weight
As part of the experiment, 42 adults with a body mass index (BMI) or 40 or more were supported by researchers emotionally over a course if 10 weeks as they tried to lose weight.
Researchers found that those who felt like they were mentally supported were more likely to lose weight.
“We wanted to teach and make the patients aware of the connection between weight and mental health,” Trine Tetlie Eik-Nes, who led the study, explained in a statement.
“The goal was for them to become more aware of the challenges they faced in everyday life and what strategies could help.”
It seems that by talking about their issues and expressing themselves, they were able to delve a bit deeper into what caused them to emotionally eat.
“Participants were able to identify what it was about their mindsets and lifestyles that were triggering overeating,” Eik-Nes adds.
“Patients experienced a nearly 30 percent reduction in the number of overeating episodes and a significant improvement in their emotional issues, like inner turmoil, anxiety, depression, and irritability.
“In addition, the patients reported that they felt far less restricted in their social activities.”
